Hancock Co. Ripken All Stars fall short in regional

The baseball season came to an end for the Hancock County 11-year-old Cal Ripken All-Star team over the weekend.

After rallying to beat  9-8 earlier in the day, Hancock County was eliminated by Crown Point (IN) 7-2.

Two Kentucky teams were in the final, however. Scott County beat South Lexington 10-9.

Congrats to Hancock County on a fantastic season.

Hancock County opens Ripken Regional with win

They've left Kentucky behind for the Ohio Valley Regional, but Hancock County's Cal Ripken Baseball All-Stars are still hot.

They beat Ross Co. (Ohio) 14-3 in the opening round game of the tournament in Logansport, IN Thursday afternoon.

Hancock's Ryan Baker went 4-for-4 with 3 runs batted in to pace Hancock County, which will play again on Friday morning against Vincennes.

The Hancock County Cal Ripken 11-year-old All Stars are off to the regional tournament after sweeping through the district and state tournaments.

Hancock County has outscored opponents 117-19 in eight games.

Their next stop is the Ohio Valley Regional Tournament in Logansport, IN.

They are busy trying to practice and collect donations from a very supportive Hancock Co community before they have arrive for the tournament, which starts July 25.

Green River Senior Games now 'Masters Challenge'; events start this month

The 2012 Masters Athletic Challenge will be held May 17 - June 9, and will feature bowling, cycling, golf, swimming, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

Formerly known as the Green River Regional Senior Games, this annual event promotes physical fitness and healthy competition among area residents age 50+.

The games kick off Thursday, May 17, with bowling at Owensboro’s Diamond Lanes South. Swimming at OMHS Health Park in Owensboro (Tuesday, May 22nd) and tennis at Moreland Park in Owensboro (Wednesday, May 23rd) will take place the following week.

Apollo upsets Ohio County to advance

Apollo upset Ohio County in the KHSAA District tournament Thursday night 52-51 on a shot by Hunter Bivin with eight seconds left.  It was Ohio County's first loss since December 23.

As a result, Apollo advances to the semi-finals of the 3rd Region Basketball Tournament.

Apollo will play Meade County this Saturday, March 3 at 3:45 pm at the Owensboro Sportscenter.  

Daviess County meets Muhlenberg County in the other semi-final.

Former Ohio County football coach takes over at Apollo

Former Ohio County football coach takes over at Apollo

Apollo High School has announced that Dan Crume has been selected to serve Apollo High School as head football coach.

Crume was head coach at Ohio County from 2002-2008.

Crume, who teaches social studies at AHS, is currently the defensive coordinator for the Kentucky Wesleyan College football team, where his responsibilities include coordinating defensive strategies and defensive coaching personnel, in addition to recruiting players and staff.
