Second part of mosquito battle plan begins Monday

After aerial spraying successfully reduced high mosquito populations in flooded areas of Western Kentucky, Governor Steve Beshear directed the launch of the second part of his mosquito abatement initiative. Beginning Monday, crews will target mosquito larvae in standing flood waters.

Professional contractors conducted aerial spraying of more than 700,000 acres across Western Kentucky last week 

“Our families have enough to worry about after the floods – they don’t need the additional trouble of high populations of biting insects,” said Gov. Beshear.

Summer reading could lead to college scholarship

Eight Kentucky children will win $1,000 toward college this year by participating in a summer reading program at their local public library. The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) and the Kentucky Education Savings Plan Trust (KESPT) will sponsor the Destination College Savings Sweepstakes as part of the 2011 Summer Reading Program at participating libraries across the Commonwealth.

The sweepstakes, which runs from June 1 - Aug. 19, will award eight $1,000 college savings accounts to children 18 years or younger.

Hancock, McLean Counties now eligible for federal storm assistance

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has expanded the number of Kentucky counties eligible for Federal Public Assistance funding in the wake of the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that struck between April 22 and May 20.  FEMA has designated 14 additional Kentucky counties as eligible for reimbursement for eligible costs associated with cleanup and infrastructure repair.

Additionally, six counties that were previously eligible for federal funding to reimburse costs associated with emergency protective measures are now also eligible for reimbursement of costs associated

Looking for the faces of cancer:  program uses photos to tell stories

In April 2010 the Kentucky Cancer Program (KCP) unveiled the Green River District Faces of Cancer photo display with a reception at Kentucky Wesleyan College. KCP hopes the 2nd Faces project will continue to inspire the message of regular screening coupled with survivorship.  

The 2010 Faces of Cancer photos remain on display in Owensboro at the Mitchell Memorial Cancer Center.
