Lane restrictions, closure on KY 54 Rough River Bridge

 

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans lane restrictions and an eventual closure on KY 54 Rough River Bridge at the Ohio-Grayson County line.

The lane restrictions and planned closure at KY 54 mile point 18.23 are to allow rehabilitation of the substructure on the Rough River Bridge.

Lane restrictions are expected to start on Tuesday, May 28, as the contractor begins prep work for the project.

Buckle Up: Click it or Ticket campaign underway

We've all done it before.  Pulling your seat belt under your armpit, leaving it behind your back, or not wearing it at all.  Now Kentucky State troopers are out in full force, looking for drivers carelessly using this lifesaving device.

Beginning May 20 and running through June 2, Kentucky State Police are focusing on the "Click It or Ticket" campaign.  With Memorial Day right around the corner, law enforcement expect a significant increase of vehicle on roadways.

The Kentucky office of Highway Safety says Kentucky has an 83% seat belt usage rate.  However, the national rate is 86% usage.

Hancock Co. 8th graders work to make roads safer

HANCOCK CO., KY (WFIE)- Some Hancock County 8th graders are wrapping up the school year with a big request that they're getting ready to send to transportation officials very soon.

The students are asking transportation officials to make some changes to this intersection located between Ace's Guns and Century Aluminum, which is an area one family will never forget.

"It's the kind of hurt you never want for anyone," said Sona Miller. 

Lane Goodwin wins Hero of the Year award

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE)- A large crowd gathered at The Centre to honor Tri-State Heroes.

The American Red Cross Banquet is also a fundraiser for the organization that collects blood for area hospitals and provides emergency after fires, storms and floods. Heroes are not defined by age, and the Hero of the Year award is the late Lane Goodwin.

Take the GED in Kentucky for free from now through July 31

 

The GED test will be free in Kentucky May 15–July 31. Kentuckians taking the test during that timeframe will not have to pay the usual test fee, which will be paid by Kentucky Adult Education, a unit of the Council on Postsecondary Education.

The GED test provides adults who did not finish high school with the opportunity to certify their attainment of high school-level academic knowledge and skills. Normally, the entire GED® test taken the conventional way on paper costs the test taker $60; the fee for taking the entire computer-based GED® test is $120, a cost set by the national GED Testing Service. Free GED® classes are available through local adult education programs in all 120 Kentucky counties.

Ohio County resident Brenda Little was recognized as the 2013 ‘GRADD Volunteer of the Year’ at the 11th annual GRADD Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on April 25.

Little serves on GRADD’s Family Caregiver Support Program (FCSP) Advisory Committee, which coordinates education, training, support groups and respite for individuals caring for older adults and for grandparents raising their grandchildren.

Crop dusting helicopter crashes in Ohio County

OHIO CO., KY (WFIE)- Ohio County authorities were called to the scene of a helicopter crash on Friday night.

It happened six miles west of Hartford on Highway 136. Authorities say a crop dusting helicopter was spraying wheat in a field when the tail hit a power line, causing the plane to crash.

14 News was told that the pilot, Michael Stewart of Jay, FL, was able to crawl out of the helicopter and had only minor scratches.

Kenergy was also called to the scene to fix the power line. The FAA was also there to investigate.
