Aid available for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren; workshops set

The Green River Area Development District (GRADD) is making financial aid available, through the Kentucky Family Caregiver Program to assist area grandparents who are raising their grandchildren.

The new fiscal year began July 1, so even individuals who have previously participated in KFCP must reapply.

This program provides services to grandparents who are primary caregivers to grandchildren age 18 or younger to whom they are related by blood, marriage or adoption (by the parents).

Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC) has announced the waiting list for the Housing Choice Voucher Program or Section 8 Rental Assistance has begun accepting applications in the 87 counties in which KHC administers the program.  That includes Ohio, McLean and Hancock Counties.

The waiting list for Section 8 in these 87 counties will be open, each year, for the months of July and January.  In previous years, the list would open and close based on number of responses.  Applicants who wish to receive rental assistance from KHC must choose one of the listed counties.

Summer reading could lead to college scholarship

Eight Kentucky children will win $1,000 toward college this year by participating in a summer reading program at their local public library. The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) and the Kentucky Education Savings Plan Trust (KESPT) will sponsor the Destination College Savings Sweepstakes as part of the 2011 Summer Reading Program at participating libraries across the Commonwealth.

The sweepstakes, which runs from June 1 - Aug. 19, will award eight $1,000 college savings accounts to children 18 years or younger.

National Trails Day is June 4, and First Lady Jane Beshear and the Kentucky Recreational Trails Authority are encouraging Kentuckians to take advantage of the many trail opportunities across Kentucky.

“This is a great time to call attention to the variety of trails we have throughout Kentucky,” Mrs. Beshear said.
