Dozens of volunteers fanned out across Daviess and Hancock counties this week to make deliveries to over 300 needy senior citizens.

Nearly four tons of canned goods and other nonperishable food items were donated by shoppers at local supermarkets throughout April; and an additional $1,900 in cash was collected.

“We’re overwhelmed by the response,” said Levi Reames, owner of Comfort Keepers of Owensboro. “Once again this year, the community showed its heart for its less fortunate neighbors.”

Donations of canned goods and other nonperishable items have been pouring into local supermarkets this month, in response to the third annual ‘Stop Senior Hunger’ food drive.

Independence Bank, Comfort Keepers, GRADD, Specialty Foods Group and Canteen are seeking to rally community support to feed at least 500 low-income individuals in Daviess and Hancock counties.

The campaign runs through April 30, and according to organizers, contributions are still urgently needed.

“We see clients every day who are struggling to afford basic necessities, especially proper nutrition,” said Jiten Shah, GRADD executive director. “A donation of just $25 can help feed someone for an entire week.”

Senior Medicare Patrol program seeks volunteers

Senior Medicare Patrol program seeks volunteers

The Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program is seeking to recruit volunteers in Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, Union, and Webster counties to help Medicare beneficiaries avoid, detect, and prevent health care fraud.

SMP volunteers teach beneficiaries how to protect their personal information, identify and report errors on healthcare statements, recognize scams (like illegal marketing, providing unnecessary services, and charging for services that were not provided), and how to report medical fraud and abuse.

“Medicare paperwork can often be overwhelming,” said Tina Mattingly, GRADD SMP coordinator. “Our goal is to educate beneficiaries and caregivers so they can better understand Explanation of Benefits (EOB) and Medicare Summary Notices (MSN).”

It turned out to be a cool, but spectacular day for the Livermore Woman's Club's 1st Annual 5K Run/Walk Supporting Muscular Dystrophy.

“The cause is close to our hearts as one of our own, Tessa Wilkerson, has a form of the Muscular Dystrophy disease,” said club president Ann Renfrow.  “She was diagnosed at ten months and just celebrated her 16th birthday this past month.”

The group raised more than its goal of $1,500 for MDA.
