Part of a 15-stop tour across the Commonwealth, this event is designed to educate current and prospective small business owners on resources available to help them start, grow and sustain their businesses.

Kentucky Labor Cabinet Secretary Mark Brown today presented Big Rivers’ Coleman Station with the Governor’s Safety and Health Award.

The Governor’s Safety and Health Award provides special recognition for outstanding safety and health performance and encourages the development of programs designed to reduce and even eliminate occupational injuries and illnesses.

Local senior care business hopes to hire 100 workers this year

 

The Home Instead Senior Care office serving Owensboro, Henderson and much of western Kentucky today announced it expects to add 100 CAREGivers to its existing staff in 2013.

The local company’s anticipated growth is a key indicator of the increasing demand for home care professionals and the strength of the industry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of personal care aides is expected to grow by 70 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Separate sealed bids will be received by the Hancock County Fiscal Court for the price of each mowing, including weed eating and spraying, of the following properties:  Hancock County Career Center, South Hancock Park, Hancock Senior Citizens Center, Hancock County Animal Shelter and sections of Vastwood Park.  The bids will be taken through 10:00 am, April 8, 2013. Bids received after that time will not be accepted.

Unemployment dips slightly in Webster, Union Counties

Unemployment in McLean County fell by nearly one percent from January to February, while Ohio and Hancock County also saw lower numbers.

Figures from the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training show McLean County had 375 jobless workers in February, 8.1% of the eligible work force.  That's down from 9% in January and 1.3% lower than in February 2012.

Ohio County unemployment dipped from 7.5% to 7.3% while Hancock County's rare fell from 7.2% to 7.1%.

Unemployment rates fell in 91 Kentucky counties between February 2012 and February 2013, while 26 county rates increased and three stayed the same.

McLean County unemployment hits 9%

McLean County unemployment reached 9% in January, lower than it was a year ago but 1.5% higher than in December of 2012.  In all, 418 residents were without a job.  In December, the county's rate had dropped to 7.5%.

In Ohio County, unemployment went from 6.5% to 7.5% while in Hancock County, 312 residents remained out of work (7.3%) compared to 6.9% in December but still lower than the rate of 7.8% in January of 2012.

Hancock County Small Business Forum set for March 19

Aspiring entrepreneurs are invited to attend the Hancock County Small Business Forum on Tuesday, March 19.

This free event, sponsored by GRADD, the City of Hawesville and the Kentucky Small Business Development Center at Murray State University, will be held from 6-7 p.m. at the Hancock County Public Library (1210 Madison Street, Hawesville).

Attendees will obtain valuable tips on how to start up a small business. Experts will share advice on key topics, such as developing a business plan, securing funding, and creating a website.
