Macy's grant brings popular holiday musical to McLean Co. Middle School

In celebration of the fifth anniversary of Macy’s holiday “Believe” campaign, the retailer is bringing the beloved “Yes, Virginia” animated special to life on school stages across the country including McLean County Middle School.

“Yes, Virginia The Musical” is based on a true story and tells the heartwarming tale of 8-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon, who wrote a letter to the New York Sun newspaper in 1897, inquiring about the existence of Santa Claus. McLean County Middle School was one of 100 schools across the country to receive a local grant from Macy’s to assist with production costs, and will welcome the holiday season with a special performance of “Yes, Virginia The Musical” on Sunday, Dec. 16 at 3:00 p.m. and Monday, Dec. 17th at 7:00 p.m.   All performances will take place in the Gymnasium.

Admission is $3.00 for adults, $1.00 for students and 3 and under get in free.

Regional contest welcomes local artists

Green River Area Development District (GRADD) is sponsoring a regional art contest in conjunction with its 44th Annual Dinner on Monday, September 17. The competition is open to residents of Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, Union and Webster counties.

Artwork will be displayed at a special reception that evening. at the Hines Center (1 Wellness Drive, Philpot). Attendees will select a winner via instant text voting, and a reproduction of the winning entry will be displayed on billboards across the region.

The contest is free to enter, with each artist allowed one submission. All visual art mediums (paintings, drawings, sculptures, etc.) are welcome. Artwork may depict any subject, but it must be an original creation.

Kentucky Music Park to open this month

The new Kentucky Music Park in Hartford will open June 15.

Area residents Rickey and Susan Matthews are behind the effort, which is situated inside the former Royal Oakls Golf Course, a 72-acre setting that includes serene hillsides, mature trees, a lake and two miles of paved trails.  The park will kick off with a “Community Day” on June 15, 2012 from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.  Residents and  invited to bring a lawn chair or blanked and hear a free concert performed by Loose Wheel, which will be playing Southern Rock, Country and Blues.     

Plans are currently underway for various groups to provide entertainment along the property throughout the year, ranging from Gospel, Bluegrass, and Jazz to Country and Rock.

The course will re-open for golfers in mid-July.

Hancock Co. student named Presidential Scholar in the Arts

A Hancock County High School student has been honored at one of 20 U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts.

Lathan Vargason will be honored in Washington, D.C., and be awarded the medallion in a White House ceremony next month.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the names of the recipients Wednesday.  The Scholars were nominated by YoungArts, a program of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. For an artistically talented graduating high school senior, inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon them.

The award is presented on behalf of the President of the United States, and selection is based upon academic, civic and artistic achievement.   Lathan is an accomplished artist.

Heath Eric & Molly G to perform in Calhoun

McLean County natives, and professional performing musical artists Heath Eric & Molly G are returning to the Calhoun Senior Citizen’s Center in Calhoun on Saturday, April 14, to perform a dinner show / concert for the second consecutive year.

Tickets are free.

“We are so excited to be able to perform for all of our friends, fans, and family in our hometown once again. Folks ask us all of the time about our shows, our music, and our travels. We are thrilled to team up with the McLean County Senior Citizens Center to present a night of great entertainment and a meal, right here in McLean County,” said Heath Eric.

Green Meadows Gospel get together Friday night

Green Meadows Gospel Music Association will be having a meetingat the Green Tea Cafe in Beaver Dam on February 17 at 6:30 P.M.

Featured singers will be Jessie Bailey, Renee Wedding and Lena Aldridge. Come enjoy some great food and fellowship while you listen to some good gospel music.

The group says "feel free to invite your pastor and other church members to come".
