Kentucky Utilities Co. giving $30 for recycled refrigerators

LOUISVILLE, KY (AP)- People in 79 Kentucky counties can make a few extra bucks if they're ready to get rid of an old refrigerator.

Louisville Gas and Electric Co. and Kentucky Utilities Co. are giving $30 for a properly recycled refrigerator or freezer.

Tri-state KY high schools make list of best schools in nation

KENTUCKY (WFIE)- Owensboro High School has been named one of the best high schools in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

It's the third time the school has received this recognition. Recently OHS received a makeover which included a new gym, fine arts, and performing arts areas.

Ohio County and McLean County High Schools also made the best schools list.

Hay producers say yields are down

As many hay producers make their first cutting, they are finding lower-than-normal yields. The lower yields are due to a variety of reasons and depend on the type of hay produced and the producer’s location, said Ray Smith, extension forage specialist with the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture.

An unseasonably mild winter and a warm March allowed the hay crop to mature quicker than normal. But many areas in Western Kentucky have had very little rain this spring, which could be one explanation for lower yields of grass hay.

Mobile home destroyed by fire in Livermore

The Livermore, Southeastern district and Central district fire departments responded to a mobile home fire Monday afternoon around 2:30.

Fire officials say a passer-by noticed the home at the intersection of 4th and Walnut Streets was on fire and called the fire department.  No one was home at the time and firefighters were able to quell the flames with no injuries. 

The home is a complete loss.

Public microchip is Tuesday at Humane Society of Henderson County

If anyone has had the misfortune of losing an animal, then it's no secret the loss that people feel when one is gone either by theft, escape, or just a mishap on the owners part.

Microchipped animals have a way to get back to you, as soon as they are found by an animal control, humane society, as well as most vets all over the country. 

The Humane Society of Henderson County will be microchipping all companion (cats and dogs) animals for the public on Tuesday May 15.  The clinic starts at noon, and will go no later than 7pm.  Come early, as late arrivals will be turned away!

Island teen hurt after car hits pole

A teenage girl from Island suffered minor injuries in a car accident on KY 81 in McLean County late Friday night.

Kentucky State troopers say Brittany Burden, 18, was travelling south in a White 2003 Chrysler Sebring when her vehicle crossed the northbound lane, left the roadway, struck a utility pole, and came to a final rest in an earth embankment.

 She was transported to Madisonville Hospital where she was treated and released.
